NEW CANADA POST OFFICES, 2001 TO DATE

Canada Post has been identifying its post offices by number since 1923. The numbers, with a few exceptions, began to appear on date stamp cancellations in early 1950. Collectors called them MOONs or Money Order Office Numbers. That series was replaced the first of April 1973 by six-digit numbers which we called POCONs or Post Office Computer Organization Numbers. At least they look like six-digit numbers but in reality they were five-digit numbers followed by a check-digit for computer entry. They are known more recently as Responsibility Centre Numbers and Cost Centre Numbers.

Canadian Post introduced a new numbering sequence just for Franchise Post Offices about November 2001. It began to appear on date stamps that month and was distinguished by true six-digit numbers beginning with “0000--”. Approximately 50 numbers were introduced initially, in what appears to be a test series (000051 to 000100). Early in 2002 numbers began to appear beginning with 100001 and have followed a sequence from there ever since. Over 2700 new offices have been opened or incurred a change in status in the six years since. Franchise Offices include what are called Call-For Stamp Shops, a lower class of office that has very limited counter service. These offices are not included in the listing on the Canada Post web site and they probably account for many of the missing numbers in the listing below. The listing is substantially complete for offices in western provinces and northern territories but many short-term closed offices in the eastern provinces are missing.

Office numbers are assigned to both corporate and franchise offices. The latter get a new number whenever the franchise changes hands or changes status with the type of service offered. Corporate offices continue to use the numbering system that was in use before 2001. Main offices may be assigned more than one number which shows on their date stamps, usually for different services offered, i.e. retail counter, letter carrier section, registration, priority courier etc. Only the Retail counter office numbers are listed on the CPC web site.

Annual lists of post offices are no longer available from Canada Post. The list of post offices that follows is a work in progress. It is featured in office-number order. Opening and closing dates are indicated if known. This list is being updated continuously as reports of new offices are received. Updates will appear on this site on a periodic basis. Additional data for the list is welcome and may be submitted to Doug Murray at doug@spicemerchants.ca
